CHICKASHA, Okla. – Four second-half goals lifted the second-seeded University of Science & Arts (OK) women's soccer team over seventh-seeded Texas Wesleyan University by a final score of 6-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday.
USAO improved to 15-4 on the season and advanced to the semifinal round where they will meet third-seeded Wayland Baptist University. Texas Wesleyan dropped to 8-7-2 on the year.
The Rams played the Drovers to a 2-2 tie at intermission.
Gracie Spradley got the Rams on the board first when she scored unassisted in the 12
th minute.
USAO's Emma Rice answered with goals in the 25
th and 26
th minutes, but the Rams knotted the game at two when
Vanessa Soriano's header found the
Savanna Barron's foot in front of the net and Barron's shot eluded USAO keeper Moa Zakrisson.
USAO outshot the Texas Wesleyan 13-3 in the opening half, but the score remained tied at the midway point thanks to four saves from
Julia Villalobos.
In the 54
th minute, Rice converted a penalty kick for her third goal of the game. The goal was her 29
th of the season, moving her into a tie for second in the NAIA nationally.
Ten minutes later, the game began to unravel for the Rams. USAO's Alicia Rey scored in the 63
rd minute off an assist from Rice, Lizzy Kemp quickly made it 5-2 Drovers with a goal in the 65
th minute.
USAO tacked on a goal from Aleigha Prince in the 74
th minute to account for the 6-2 final score.
For the game, the Drovers outshot the Rams 30-5. Villalobos made nine saves against 15 shots on goal. The Drovers switched keepers at halftime and Caitlin Bishop recorded USAO's lone save of the day to preserve a clean sheet in the second half.
Texas Wesleyan was called for 18 fouls while USAO was whistled 12 times. All three yellow cards in the contest went against the Rams.
The loss ended Texas Wesleyan's season at 8-7-2 overall. The Rams entered the SAC tournament hot having won three of their final four regular season contests. Barron, a senior, led the team in scoring with 13 goals to go with seven assists while junior
Cara Zwilling added 10 goals.
After returning from injury, senior
Tameir Grosvenor scored four goals in five games to move her school record to 82 career goals scored. Grosvenor also holds the school marks for single season goals (30 in 2019), single season points (70 in 2019) and career points (187).
