TT: Wesleyan's Deng Finds Success

Fort Worth, TX - Texas Wesleyan's Zhen Deng participated in the highest stage this past weekend in Las Vegas, participating in the 2021 U.S. Open Table Tennis Championships. Originally from Hunan, China, Zhen has trained in Britain, South Korea, Japan, and many other countries for exchange training. Furthermore, Deng had many training experiences with Chinese national team members and also was the Assistant Coach of the Hubei women's team. She has also taken many titles before this tournament, winning the 2018 US Open U20 Women Singles, Women's University Singles Champion, 2021 US Texas State Qualification RR2400 Champion, 2021 Butterfly Florida Open Women Singles 1st Place and now adds 2021 U.S. OpenTable Tennis Championships Women Singles 2nd Place & 2021 U.S. Open Table Tennis Championships Women Doubles 1st Place to her already impressive resume. Deng impressed in Women's doubles in Vegas, taking 1st place with another Texas Wesleyan team member Jiaqi Lin. The highlight of the tournament was Deng's performance in the final match versus now 6x champion Lily Zhang. Falling behind 1-3 versus the 5x Singles Champion was a difficult start, but Zhen fought back, energizing the audience with a shocking 2-game streak, forcing an intense game 7 for the Women's Singles Title. Losing in game 7, Zhen certainly played the match of the entire tournament. Texas Wesleyan Head Coach Jasna Rather was proud and pleased with Deng's performance. "Zhen Deng continues to deliver outstanding performances. We hope that in the near future she becomes eligible to represent the USA in the World Championships and Olympics. She would be a great asset to the team USA," said Rather. A Sophomore at Texas Wesleyan, Deng intends to continue her education in Sports Communication where she can become a journalist or coach.
