OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Freshmen phenoms
Camille Fournier and
Mea Mohler were crowned champions of their respective weight classes while the TXWES team placed fourth at the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament on Sunday.
No. 2 Fournier (116-lb.) collected three additional awards for Freshman of the Year, Most Outstanding Wrestler and Most Pins of the meet. The freshman from Weatherford, Texas pinned two opponents in 3:24 and had one tech fall. She went 5-0 and scored a team best 21.5 points.
Hailing from Leander, Texas, No. 3 Mohler (130-lb.) went 2-1 at the tournament, winning both matches by decision against fellow ranked opponents.
No. 7
Madison Brown was runner-up in the 101-lb. class after going 3-1 on the day adding 13.5 points to the team score.
Maryellen Lafferty (143-lb) took third place winning her first match via pin over No. 17 Irene Sanchez Figuera (OCU) but fell in the next two.
No. 6
Clarissa Archuleta and
Alexis Saldivar both placed fifth.
As a team, TXWES placed fourth and Wayland Baptist took the team championship with Oklahoma City as runner-up and Lyon College in third.
Next, TXWES grapplers head to nationals at the NAIA Invitational on March 12-13 in Jamestown, N.D.
