3 Women’s Wrestlers reach All-America status at nationals

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — In just their second year as a program, the Texas Wesleyan Women's Wrestling team had four individuals compete in the NAIA National Invitational with three earning All-American honors this weekend.

Madison Brown (101 lb.), Camille Fournier (116 lb.), Mea Mohler (130 lb.) and Maryellen Lafferty (143 lb.) qualified and competed in their respective weight classes at the national level with the first three becoming All-Americans.

Freshman Mea Mohler placed third and reached All-American status after going 5-1 at the invite. She started with three straight tech wins, but dropped her semifinals match 6-3 to Campbellsville.

She advanced to the third-place match by injury default and then pinned in-state rival Wayland Baptist's De'anna Prince. Mohler previously defeated Prince in the SAC tournament's opening round by a 6-4 decision and would go onto becoming a conference champion.

Mohler hails from Leander, Texas and finishes the season 19-3 and ranked No. 3 in the nation.

From Justin, Texas, sophomore Madison Brown also started the invite with three straight victories but dropped her semifinal match to Providence. She wrestled the same opponent in the bracket's backside, pinning her this time advancing to the third-place match.

However, she would lose to Southern Oregon to place fourth and receive All-American honors. Brown finishes the season ranked No. 7 and has a 15-9 record.

Freshman Camille Fournier entered nationals undefeated 18-0 and ranked second in the 116 lb. class. She pinned her first two opponents but suffered her first loss of the season in the quarterfinals. She battled back, getting two 11-0 tech falls and a pin to wrestle in the third-place match.

She dropped the third-place match in just her second loss of the season to place fourth and earn All-America accolades- a wonderful addition to the hardware she earned at the SAC tournament. She went 5-0 becoming the league champion and was also named Freshman of the Year, Most Outstanding Wrestler and had the most pins. She is from Weatherford, Texas.

Freshman Maryellen Lafferty from Houston, Texas entered nationals with a 4-8 record.  She dropped her opening match to the No. 1 wrestler and eventual champion Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp of Midland. She then got two straight pins against Lyon and York to stay alive but was eliminated by the eventual third place medalist.

Lafferty took third place at the SAC tournament, which included a pin over the No. 17 wrestler in the nation. She was unranked but entered nationals No. 10 in the final NAIA coaches top-25 poll.

With only four wrestlers competing in the national invite, TXWES placed 13th of 31 teams and racked up 59 points.

Campbellsville (Ky.) captured its first NAIA Women's Wrestling Invitational title finishing with 185 points.
