MARSHALL - Texas Wesleyan University wrestlers delivered several standout performances at the Missouri Valley Open on Saturday, including a third-place finish and multiple upsets against nationally ranked opponents.
At 138 pounds, Sam placed third after defeating NCAA No. 9-ranked Barton. Her only loss came in the semifinals in a competitive match against an Iowa wrestler who went on to win the tournament.
Carla finished fourth at 207 pounds, highlighted by victories over NAIA nationally ranked No. 4 Hayeni Costa and No. 6 Haley Ward.
At 180 pounds, Ashley Lekas took seventh place, while teammate Taydem Khamjoi went 2-2. Khamjoi faced the eventual champion in the first round, leading 6-5 and putting her on her back twice before being pinned. Her losses were to the first- and fifth-place finishers.
Liz returned to competition after more than 18 months away and posted a 5-2 record at 131 pounds, falling just short of the medal rounds. She earned a win over NAIA No. 17-ranked Jill High.
In the 117-pound class, Vanessa De La Cruz and Belen Rios each went 2-2. De La Cruz pinned former Texas Wesleyan wrestler Morgan Johnson but lost 13-10 in a close Round of 16 match. Rios dropped a 3-2 decision to NAIA No. 8-ranked opponent who advanced to the finals.
At 110 pounds, Ivory Truitt and Gracie Elliot both finished 2-2. Elliot advanced to Day 2, while Truitt fell seconds short of qualifying.
Alyssa Moreno also went 2-2 at 124 pounds.
