Fruit Scores Golden Goal on Think Pink Day

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (8-2, 2-0 RRAC) took a 2-1 overtime win over Texas College (3-3, 1-1) in the 2nd Annual Dr. Elizabeth Alexander Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday.

Prior to the game, the Rams recognized Dr. Alexander on the field.  Dr. Alexander is a professor of History at Texas Wesleyan and is a breast cancer survivor who has been cancer free since 2001.  This year the Lady Rams raised $500 which will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Dr. Alexander’s name.  The Rams also wore pink jerseys for the game as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the 17th minute, Kayla Mason took a free kick and Karissa Olson sent the ball to Cara Lumpkin for the first goal of the game.  The Lady Rams then seemed content to rest on that goal, and the score remained 1-0 deep into the second half.

In the 75th minute Elizabeth Jaimes made the Rams pay, scoring the game tying goal.  The Rams could not find the net again in regulation, and the game went to overtime.

In the 95th minute, Katie Fruit ended the contest, scoring at point blank range to lift Texas Wesleyan to the 2-1 win.

The Rams outshot the Steers 24-6 and led 13-4 in shots on goal.  Katy Houchin made three saves in the win.  Nancy Dominguez made 11 saves for Texas College.

The Lady Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they travel to San Antonio, TX, to take on Our Lady of the Lake University.  That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
