DALLAS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (22-11) swept a doubleheader at Dallas Christian College on Monday. The Rams won with scores of 7-4 and 10-4 at Reverchon Park.
In his first effort of the season,
Drew Cavender was able to work around a leadoff bloop single and keep the Crusaders off the board in the first inning.
DCC took a 2-0 lead with two outs in the second when Justin Browning hit a two-run homer down the left field line. In the third,
Matt Taylor led off with a double. After
Patrick Melton drew a walk,
Glen Morrison moved the runners over with a ground ball to second, and
Christian Soberanes got the Rams on the board with an RBI groundout. The Rams then took a 3-2 lead with an RBI double off the top of the wall in right from
Justin Padron and an RBI single from
Hunter Robinson.
The Crusaders came right back and regained the lead in the bottom of the third with run-scoring singles from Zach Diaz and Will Orr. DCC loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but
Nicolas Jans escaped the jam with a strikeout and a ground ball to second.
Padron started the fifth with another double off the wall in right, and
Joseph Lassiter tied the game at 4-4 with a triple into the gap in left. The Rams then took the lead with a sac fly from
Stephen Niedwiecki.
Texas Wesleyan added insurance runs with a two-out RBI single from Soberanes in the sixth and an RBI groundout from Taylor in the seventh.
Jans (2-0) earned the win after allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six in four innings of work.
Nolan Barbee struck out three over the final two innings to nail down his second save of the season.
Padron led the Rams at the plate going 2-for-4 with two doubles. Lassiter was 2-for-3 with a triple in the win.
Dallas Christian struck first in game two, with a pair of RBI doubles from Logan Matson and Browning in the bottom of the second.
In the third inning, the Rams broke out with five runs on three hits and three walks. The rally was highlighted by a bases-clearing double from
Eric Epperson. The Rams kept the offense rolling in the fourth with three runs on two hits, including a two-run single from Lassiter.
An RBI double from Morrison pushed the score to 9-2 in the fifth. Dallas Christian plated an unearned run in the sixth, but the Rams tacked on one more run with a pair of singles in the seventh.
DCC’s Jeremy Diviney tripled and scored in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late and the Rams prevailed 10-4.
Bradley Stone (1-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits while stirking out three in four innings. Epperson was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win.
Jason Holmes added a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, when they host the University of Dallas. That game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
