FORT WORTH, TX: After being held to nine hits in Saturday’s doubleheader, the Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (26-15) exploded for 15 runs on 16 hits in a 15-4 run-shortened Red River Athletic Conference win over Bacone (9-26) on Sunday.
Bacone sent eight men to the plate in the first inning, scoring three runs on four base-hits and a walk, but the Rams would bat around in both the second and third innings.
Christian Soberanes led off the bottom of the second with a double down the left field line.
Eric Epperson followed with a single to left and took second on the throw into third base.
Jason Holmes brought both runners in with a double down the left field line.
Matt Taylor made it four straight hits with a bunt single that put runners at the corners with no outs. With two outs,
Patrick Melton and
Stephen Niedwiecki delivered RBI singles, and the Rams took a 4-3 lead.
Epperson hit an RBI triple in the third inning and then scored on a sac fly from Holmes. Three Bacone errors and an RBI single from
Joseph Lassiter allowed the Rams to score two more runs and take an 8-3 lead.
Epperson launched a solo homer in the fourth inning. With two down in the inning,
Taylor Jockers doubled
Garrett McFadden home from first base to bring the score to 10-3.
The Rams continued to put up crooked numbers in the fifth inning, plating two runs on two hits including an RBI single from Epperson.
Texas Wesleyan knocked in three more runs on two hits, including a two-run double from Soberanes in the sixth inning.
Epperson went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored while only lacking a double for the cycle. Niedwicki added three hits in five trips to the plate. Lassiter, Melton, and Soberanes each had two hits. For Soberanes it was a 2-for-4 day with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Daniel Milliman (4-0) took the win after allowing one run on three hits in two innings of relief work.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday when they host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field. The Rams will play a three-game RRAC series with Northwood University April 8-10. Friday’s opener is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start in Cedar Hill, TX, with Saturday’ and Sunday’s games scheduled for 1:00 p.m. starts at LaGrave Field.
